FAQ

1. What Do I Need to Bring On a Private Charter?
  • You could just bring yourself, but here are our suggestions

  • A Camera (Yes, your smartphone will work, too!)

  • Sunglasses or a hat to keep off the sun

  • Extra clothing (it’s colder than you expect on the water, so bring a sweater)

  • Ample sunscreen to protect your skin from the sun

  • Any snacks and beverages you’d like to have (you can even bring a small drink cooler)

2. Where Are You Located?

You can find us at 60 Portland Pier in Portland; we share our section of the pier with Luke’s Lobster Portland.

3. Where Should I Park My Car?

On the pier, there is limited metered parking (please note meters are on 24/7, not just during peak hours). You can check out this map for a full list of the other parking facilities in the Downtown and Old Port areas of Portland. Most meters in the old port are free after 6 p.m. and on Sundays. We suggest you arrive at least 20 minutes early to give yourself plenty of time to find parking, as it can be a struggle.

4. What There’s Bad Weather?

All charters are held rain or shine at Rocky Bottom Fisheries. The waters of the Casco Bay stay calm since it’s a protected bay with peninsulas and islands blocking the worst of the waves. In the event we do need to cancel a charter for any reason, customers always receive a full refund. Your charter can be rescheduled for another day and time, depending on availability. If you need to cancel for some reason, we require seven days’ notice for full refunds. Please call us on our main line at (207) 274-1844 within that 7-day window so we can help you with cancellation, rebooking, and/or future credits.

5. What If I Need to Use the Bathroom?

All of our vessels are equipped with restrooms (called “heads” on boats). That said, we encourage you to use the restroom ahead of time if you can.

6. Should I Worry About Seasickness?

Not for most people. However, if you have had seasickness in the past, we suggest Dramamine before your charter or using a motion sickness wristband.  This helps to ensure your voyage goes smoothly and is totally enjoyable!

7. Is It Expected that I Tip the Crew?

Tipping is never required. However, our crews put in long hours at sea to ensure your private charter in Portland, Maine, is fantastic. If you do give them a tip, it signals to them that you recognize and appreciate their hard work.

8. Can I Keep Lobsters Caught During The Charter or Buy them from Rocky Bottom?

We are not permitted to keep or sell lobsters that we catch on any of our tours or charters by law. That said, please feel free to reach out to us by phone at (207) 274-1844 to ask about buying lobsters from our commercial fishing vessel.
